2022-09-09 07:42:18 <Sose> I have a problem trying to follow https://xmonad.org/TUTORIAL.html
2022-09-09 07:42:38 <Sose> xmobar isn't starting, I'm using the config in the tutorial and I get this weird error https://gist.github.com/Sose/f80036a56c1fcacdfb128f046c1084f5
2022-09-09 07:42:51 <Sose> unexpected "s" ? there's no "s"
2022-09-09 07:43:48 <Sose> line 31 is the line that starts with "sepChar" so I guess there is an "s" there
2022-09-09 07:50:27 <Solid> Sose: xmobar's error message for the config file are pretty horrible; my guess is that you don't have certain extensions enabled
2022-09-09 07:51:26 <Sose> ohh
2022-09-09 07:51:51 <Sose> I just did "cabal install xmobar".. I forgot the part about enabling all extensions >.< thanks

2022-09-09 08:32:34 <Guest266> Hello all! yesterday I tried to input the workspaces inside the xmobar, the configs are working good, but the problem is that the bar is not updating at all, but at least it is there.
2022-09-09 08:32:34 <Guest266> like I said yesterday, my xmonad version is still .15, so I can't use the modern statusbar function, what can I do to update my mobar to show workspaces?

2022-09-09 08:32:36 <Guest266> thanks in advance!
2022-09-09 08:35:11 <Solid> Guest266: you should not be using XMonadLog when using pipes (as the tutorial says)
2022-09-09 08:35:51 <Solid> (you want StdinReader instead)
2022-09-09 08:36:10 <Solid> also "xmobar -options -foo -bar" looks like a mistake
2022-09-09 08:36:53 <Solid> friendly advice: actually follow the tutorial and start with a blank config; building things up from scratch is much easier than starting with something you don't understand and then trying to cram other things you don't understand into it
2022-09-09 08:37:30 <Guest266> I understand,
2022-09-09 08:37:56 <Guest266> ok I'll do it, thanks and bye

2022-09-09 09:24:52 <Sose> how do I change some of the default keybindings of xmonad? I want to change super-q to close focused window and super-enter to open terminal (instead of super-shift-enter), rebind restart to somewhere else etc... current config is https://gist.github.com/Sose/0379419711b467a7686ab791aed06174
2022-09-09 09:25:13 <Sose> I know of the additionalKeysP thing but how do I overwrite or rebind some of the originals?
2022-09-09 09:28:42 <mesaoptimizer> Sose: I believe that your additional bindings overwrite the originals. Have you tried it? Either way, what I do is I remove keybindings I don't like using `removeKeysP`
2022-09-09 09:29:13 <mesaoptimizer> for example: "`removeKeysP` ["M-" ++ [n] | n <- ['a' .. 'z']]" removes all mod-LETTER keybinds
2022-09-09 09:33:35 <Sose> ah, okay, I'll try if overwriting just works :)

2022-09-09 10:36:51 <thyriaen> I would like to bind my modkey pressed without anything else as my launcher - is this possible ?
2022-09-09 10:41:28 <mesaoptimizer> I don't think that is possible, at least based on what I've seen in the docs
2022-09-09 10:41:38 <thyriaen> oki
2022-09-09 10:41:39 <thyriaen> thanks
2022-09-09 10:41:55 <mesaoptimizer> in essence, you'd need to have a KeySym for the modkey and I didn't find a KeySym for the modkey
2022-09-09 10:42:23 <mesaoptimizer> but I may be wrong
2022-09-09 10:46:02 <fizzie> In plain X terms, the modifier keys do have keysyms and are also normal keypresses (just check `xev` for example), but I don't know if XMonad keybindings and/or X grabs would allow for handling them separately. You'd definitely have to do *something* to ignore those presses where you ended up pressing something else while the modifier key was held down.
2022-09-09 10:51:16 <fizzie> Or more accurately, the keys used as modifiers *also* have keysyms. There's no keysym for "mod4" per se, but there's a xK_Super_L (etc.) for the keys mapped to mod4 here.

2022-09-09 11:02:17 <Sose> I'm using default keybinds for mod-j and mod-k to switch focus but it feels.. backwards. it would make more sense to me if the keybinds were reversed
2022-09-09 11:04:13 <thyriaen> you can easily change it - or do you want to propose that the default is being changed ?
2022-09-09 11:04:42 <Sose> I was looking for tips how to change it only for myself :D
2022-09-09 11:06:18 <Sose> ah, I managed to find https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-0.17.1/docs/src/XMonad.Config.html
2022-09-09 11:06:22 <Sose> maybe I can manage
2022-09-09 11:08:20 <Solid> thyriaen: Try mapping <Super_L> (or whatever your modkey is) to an action and see what happens :D
2022-09-09 11:09:43 <Solid> Sose: changing the default bindings isn't difficult; though there is _some_ internal logic to this (M-j goes *down* the stack and M-k goes *up*, much like these keys are used in e.g. vim)
2022-09-09 11:18:13 <Sose> Solid: it wasn't too difficult once I found the source for the default keybinds so I could see what they do now. I understand the vim logic but I'm not very familiar with vim keys myself
2022-09-09 11:18:41 <Sose> maybe I will get super confused with up/down if I decide to learn the vim keys some day :)
2022-09-09 11:18:59 <Solid> at the end of the day what counts is what you're more comfortable with :)
2022-09-09 11:21:46 <Sose> I'm going to propose that vim swap j/k around because it feels more natural to me reversed :D
2022-09-09 11:21:55 <Solid> :D
2022-09-09 11:31:12 <thyriaen> that seams reasonable

2022-09-09 12:12:00 <fizzie> But... the character 'j' extends *down*, while the character 'k' extends *up*. It makes perfect sense as-is.
2022-09-09 12:12:46 <fizzie> As in, there's a bit of the glyph that sticks out in the relevant direction.
2022-09-09 12:17:14 <geekosaur> for some value of sense. occasionally I wonder about an alternative wasd keysym set for roguelike players 🙂
2022-09-09 12:17:39 <geekosaur> have to change the key for monitor 0 though
