2023-04-13 20:15:40 <Ou42> so it's all or nothing?
2023-04-13 20:15:44 <geekosaur> yeh
2023-04-13 20:16:16 <Ou42> I'm kinda weary of that, but like I said, the slow and steady (debatable) progress setting up XMonad/Xmobar/Trayer is acceptable.
2023-04-13 20:16:27 <Ou42> so I might just go the "liskin" route.
2023-04-13 20:16:40 <Ou42> just slower
2023-04-13 20:19:55 <liskin> I think most people set everything up manually, so it's well documented
2023-04-13 20:21:06 <liskin> not really a tutorial kind of well documented, but arch wiki has lots of pages about individual pieces (like what to use for wifi and volume and …) and people's dotfiles can be an inspiration
2023-04-13 20:21:30 <liskin> some people like DistroTube have dotfiles intended for other people to use
2023-04-13 20:22:20 <liskin> unfortunately it lags a bit behind what we consider best practice, so I can't recommend that without geekosaur looking bad at me :-)
2023-04-13 20:22:43 <geekosaur> actually I'm fine with the arch wiki and consider it a very useful resource
2023-04-13 20:22:55 <geekosaur> I just disapprove of arch _packaging_
2023-04-13 20:23:25 <liskin> I meant DT's config
2023-04-13 20:23:34 <geekosaur> oh
2023-04-13 20:23:44 <geekosaur> I mostly ignore that 🙂
2023-04-13 20:24:32 <geekosaur> I mean. I'm the one who uses xmonad under a DE, who am I to question others' ways of doing it?
2023-04-13 20:25:56 <geekosaur> I do question rivers a bit but that's mostly because I'm trying to maximize usable space, not show as much of a fancy background as possible 🙂
2023-04-13 20:27:33 <Ou42> but getting `feh` to show wallpaper was such a thrill!
2023-04-13 20:28:09 <geekosaur> *ricers
2023-04-13 20:28:37 <geekosaur> also that's more /r/unixporn than DT
2023-04-13 20:28:49 <Ou42> using xrandr to manually turn off my laptop screen causes a glitch in the wallpaper display. I think there's some weird overlap of the monitors or something and when it's turned off it has a region of garbage... but I can reissue the `feh` cmd and the wallpaper returns too all its glory.
2023-04-13 20:29:49 <geekosaur> do you use a compositor? any chance it's getting confused about a shadow on the disabled monitor?
2023-04-13 20:29:54 <Ou42> very tempting. I dunno if I like MATE even if I swtich WM though.
2023-04-13 20:31:55 <geekosaur> I went with MATE because I like GNOME 2 (MATE is the supported fork of that) and you can't really use xmonad with GNOME 3-based stuff including Cinnamon (well, there's gnome-flashback on some systems) even if I did like it
2023-04-13 20:32:09 <geekosaur> I used to run KDE but KDE4 drove me away for some reason
2023-04-13 20:33:01 malook joins (~Thunderbi@176.18.63.131)
2023-04-13 20:33:18 <geekosaur> I preferred the older setup to Plasma
2023-04-13 20:34:30 <Ou42> anybody ever run Xmonad on top of xfce?
2023-04-13 20:34:36 <geekosaur> but there are others, xfce4, lxde, lxqt, etc.
2023-04-13 20:35:01 <geekosaur> yes, we have a somewhat out of date https://wiki.haskell.org/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_XFCE
2023-04-13 20:37:33 <Ou42> nice. the rabbit hole is quite deep
2023-04-13 20:38:14 <Ou42> I have a ton of Q's but (a) if I ramble/stick around long enough you answer them before I ask or (b) they're off topic.
2023-04-13 20:38:54 <Ou42> like, does anybody here have any Advent of Code solutions ( preferably in Haskell) online?
2023-04-13 20:39:39 <geekosaur> ask in #haskell, plenty of people have github or gitlab repos with past AoCs
2023-04-13 20:40:08 <Ou42> compositor ... only what huh, not sure if it was DistroTube's recommendation or something we talked about here. but yes, compton's successor.
2023-04-13 20:40:18 <geekosaur> picom, yes
2023-04-13 20:40:19 <Ou42> I can't rem off hand if it's mentioned in the xmonad.org tut.
2023-04-13 20:41:40 Ou42 checks
2023-04-13 20:41:50 <Ou42> it is not. So that was one "borrow" from DT's stuff.
2023-04-13 20:42:13 <Ou42> w/o it, the hover effect and/or drag/drop of a url to bookmark it was unslightly.
2023-04-13 20:51:11 <Ou42> geekosaur: when you said, "sadly the dconf thing for the window manager can't be done by a separate xsessions entry as far as I can determine" you mean there can be only one MATE in the desktops list?
2023-04-13 20:51:34 <geekosaur> you can have more than one but you can't control what dconf entries it uses
2023-04-13 20:52:06 <geekosaur> and since all its configuration is via dconf that means you can't have them behave differently
2023-04-13 20:53:14 <Ou42> thanks for clarifying.
2023-04-13 20:55:30 <Ou42> I'm so used to being here at 3-5am this feels weird. I'm gonna go take a stab at a few things. Thanks again.

2023-04-14 06:23:41 <jusa> geekosaur: btw modified SubLayouts.hs worked, but it required logoff/on to take effect, just calling restart "xmonad" True wasn't enough.. I have xmonad now from stack, I wonder if that is causing that? anyways, thanks again, now I at least have the correct font and I can continue with life :)

2023-04-14 15:58:38 <geekosaur> @ask Ou42 Is there a reason for you to not use an ssh key? From what I see about Personal Access Tokens, they're an alternative to passwords, not really to ssh keys
2023-04-14 15:58:38 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.
