2022-06-01 19:30:57 × banc quits (banc@gateway/vpn/airvpn/banc) (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
2022-06-01 19:32:25 <twiclo> Bit of an interesting one for you guys. I'm unable to run a modified version of oldschool runescape in fullscreen. Under cinnamon I can fullscreen this just fine but when I give the window a whole screen in xmonad it doesn't grow to fill it. It seems like it doesn't know it doesn't have the space
2022-06-01 19:33:29 <geekosaur> what version of xmonad?
2022-06-01 19:34:58 <geekosaur> before 0.17 we don't advertise emwh fullscreen support properly, which breaks some programs. in 0.17 this should be fixed provided you're using the ewmhFullscreen combinator
2022-06-01 19:35:20 <twiclo> 0.17.0
2022-06-01 19:35:38 <twiclo> I might not have ewmh in my config
2022-06-01 19:36:02 <twiclo> Doesn't adding that change behavior of other windows? I love having applications think they're fullscreened when they're really not
2022-06-01 19:36:10 <geekosaur> it's also conceivable that you need something like XMonad.Util.Hacks.windowedFullscreenFixeventFix
2022-06-01 19:36:29 <geekosaur> it's also conceivable that you need something like XMonad.Util.Hacks.windowedFullscreenFixEventHook
2022-06-01 19:36:36 <twiclo> I do have the fix library set up
2022-06-01 19:36:39 <geekosaur> which iscusses that exact use case, in fact
2022-06-01 19:37:18 <twiclo> So what changes in fullscreen behavior can I expect if I set up ewmh?
2022-06-01 19:40:34 <geekosaur> more programs will recognize fullscreen support, and more programs should do windowed fullscreen (without ewmh many programs can only recognize fullscreen by a floating fullscreen window)
2022-06-01 19:40:48 <twiclo> Oh it looks like I do have it set up already
2022-06-01 19:40:56 <twiclo> p.twil.cx/xab
2022-06-01 19:41:24 <geekosaur> I admit I was wondering, since ewmhFullscreen can't work without ewmh
2022-06-01 19:42:27 <twiclo> Do I need both ewmh and ewmhFullscreen in my main definition or can I just have the fullscreen one?
2022-06-01 19:43:09 <geekosaur> if you have only ewmhFullscreen but not ewmh, ewmhFullscreen won't do anything
2022-06-01 19:43:27 <twiclo> Okay yeah I remember why I have it disabled. If I fullscreen a youtube video it will take over the whole monitor instead of just its container
2022-06-01 19:43:43 <geekosaur> ewmhFullscreen can be made to do windowed fullscreen, but I don't know the details, they're discussed in the windowedFullscreenFixEventHook docs
2022-06-01 19:45:46 <twiclo> It looks like it doesn't fix the runescape issue
2022-06-01 19:46:10 <twiclo> Sometimes if I launch cinnamon in another tty, start the program, kill it, then launch it in xmonad it will behave properly
2022-06-01 19:46:13 <twiclo> Not sure if that's helpful
2022-06-01 19:48:09 <geekosaur> not very, aside from the fact thatr it remembers fullscreen once it has recognized it
2022-06-01 19:48:24 <geekosaur> which again makes me think ewmhFullscreen + ewmh is needed
2022-06-01 20:17:50 <Solid> sigh, zurihac only seems to have discord as a communication medium
2022-06-01 20:18:06 Solid will now have to engage the friendly people in this channel to relay important information to him :>

2022-06-02 06:22:31 <mesaoptimizer> I've never seen a `windowPrompt` before and this is my first time adding a keybind to use one. The additional keybind in the snippet does not do anything: what mistake did I make? https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/EFArdevG/

2022-06-02 06:26:01 <Lycurgus> trying to use unity/ubuntu as the default wm forced recall of the silent reason for a tiling wm, namely not to eat the cpu

2022-06-02 06:41:57 <Solid> liskin: thanks! Btw, under https://zfoh.ch/zurihac2022/projects.html xmonad is listed twice (your entry and my entry). We should probably merge these and just put both of us as the contact there
2022-06-02 06:43:00 <Solid> mesaoptimizer: if you've restarted with M-q, also make sure that you have the relevant fonts installed (the prompt uses bitmap fonts by default, which used to be bundled with X11 on all distros, but aren't anymore)
2022-06-02 06:43:28 <Solid> (or change the font via `def{ font = "xft:monospace" }` or something like that)
2022-06-02 06:44:21 <mesaoptimizer> Yeah, that worked. I'm a bit surprised at this silent failure though :/
2022-06-02 06:44:43 <mesaoptimizer> thanks!
2022-06-02 06:45:17 × Lycurgus quits (~juan@user/Lycurgus) (Quit: Exeunt juan@acm.org)
2022-06-02 06:45:31 <Solid> yeah that's a good point
2022-06-02 06:46:19 <Solid> But I'm not sure what can be done in such a situation... I guess we could trigger xmessage or something saying that the font couldn't be found
2022-06-02 06:46:28 <Solid> not sure it that would be too annoying
2022-06-02 06:50:50 <Solid> mh, probably not since something not working without explanation is exactly the kind of thing that one would hope came with a giant popup explaining "THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO"
2022-06-02 06:51:23 <Solid> mesaoptimizer: I have to run now, but if you could create an issue in the xmonad-contrib repo so we don't forget about this that would be great!
2022-06-02 06:51:45 <mesaoptimizer> I'll do that!

2022-06-02 07:05:01 <mc47> liskin, Solid: xmonad appears twice in the projects list for ZuriHac, maybe it's confusing for some people. Should we remove an entry?
2022-06-02 07:06:57 <mc47> ah, I see you talked about that already lol! I was checking the freenode logs for some reason and missed that
2022-06-02 07:07:03 <mc47> sorry O:)

2022-06-02 09:34:40 <geekosaur> zurihac-goers: apparently they're using discord over there? should I try to make myself available at some point? (not that I have any business being awake at this time, but, well.)

2022-06-02 09:35:16 <geekosaur> also I thought we already had code to default fonts properly if we had xft support
2022-06-02 09:37:36 <Solid[m]> geekosaur: currently looking into setting up an IRC (or matrix) bridge for the Discord thing, so hopefully that'll be available soon-ish
2022-06-02 09:37:57 <Solid[m]> r.e. fonts: yeah, I've noticed that as well
2022-06-02 09:38:06 <Solid[m]> all fixed in 0.17.0 already, if only distros would ship it :/
2022-06-02 09:43:29 <geekosaur> flip side, maybe we give up the pretense of releases and just tell everyone to run from git :)
