| 2023-03-07 20:05:18 | <kora9> | liskin: Yeah, I've used it as well at times. I like their fuzzy matching better, but I prefer dmenu's compact UI. I know rofi has a dmenu mode (for syntax compatibility) but is it possible to modify the rofi UI to be up top like dmenu? |
| 2023-03-07 20:06:20 | Solid | also just wrote his own wrapper around dmenu |
| 2023-03-07 20:13:30 | <MrElendig> | kora9: you can theme rofi to be a single line on top yes |
| 2023-03-07 20:13:54 | <kora9> | MrElendig: Oh nice, that's something I'm going to do tomorrow! :) |
| 2023-03-07 20:14:19 | <MrElendig> | kora9: see if you have /usr/share/rofi/themes/dmenu.rasi |
| 2023-03-07 20:14:40 | <MrElendig> | that is a ready to use one that sometimes ships with rofi |
| 2023-03-07 20:14:46 | <kora9> | Yep! |
| 2023-03-07 20:15:04 | <kora9> | Cool |
| 2023-03-07 20:15:31 | <kora9> | My main annoyance with dmenu has been that it doesn't respect .applications files, rofi does (plus has nice fuzzy matching) |
| 2023-03-07 20:15:50 | <MrElendig> | can copy it to .comfig/rofi/themes or wheatever the path is and then rofi -theme dmenu |
| 2023-03-07 20:15:57 | <kora9> | (I know the reason is probably because .application files suckmore, but in practice I use them) :) |
| 2023-03-07 20:16:26 | <kora9> | MrElendig: Cool, I'll do that now :) |
| 2023-03-07 20:17:01 | <MrElendig> | er.. just goes directly to ~/.config/rofi |

| 2023-03-07 21:20:08 | <liskin> | rofi is incredibly powerful, I use it for emoji entry (because the ctrl-. keybinding only works in certain gtk apps, but not in chrome nor firefox) and also for all those things one would use GridSelect for, like switching layouts in xmonad, focusing a window by name, focusing a browser tab by title, etc. |

| 2023-03-08 06:56:21 | <Solid> | liskin: All of the other things I mostly do with X.P. (that reminds me that I've always wanted to clean up that mess…) or Emacs (in the case of emoji entry), but that "focusing a browser tab by title" sounds really interesting; do you know how that's implemented? |
| 2023-03-08 07:07:59 | × | incertia quits (~incertia@209.122.71.127) (Ping timeout: 264 seconds) |
| 2023-03-08 07:14:21 | <Solid> | In other news: what do people think about https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad-contrib/issues/793#issuecomment-1459627557 ? The tl;dr is that X.L.Cross has not been touched in any significant way since 2009 and it just seems to have bitrotted to a point of near uselessness by now, so I'd just like to deprecate the module alltogether |
| 2023-03-08 07:31:47 | <geekosaur> | what are the alternatives you mentioned? |
| 2023-03-08 07:32:04 | <geekosaur> | (I'm having a white night, it's 0230 here) |
| 2023-03-08 07:35:06 | <Solid> | I was thinking along the lines of ThreeColumns, CenteredSingle (granted, that's only for the first window), or CenteredMaster |
| 2023-03-08 07:35:47 | <geekosaur> | oh right, ThreeColMid |
| 2023-03-08 07:36:46 | <geekosaur> | and I guess nobody's using it or we'd have heard of it by now |

| 2023-03-08 07:42:32 | <Solid> | exactly, yeah |
| 2023-03-08 07:42:40 | <geekosaur> | also I'm surprised more of contrib hasn't bitrotted |
| 2023-03-08 07:42:57 | <geekosaur> | (or maybe it has but nobody's using the bitrotted parts?) |
| 2023-03-08 07:43:06 | → | incertia joins (~incertia@209.122.71.127) |
| 2023-03-08 07:45:21 | <liskin> | Solid: yes I do know, because I did it myself :-) |
| 2023-03-08 07:46:40 | <liskin> | Solid: plasma-browser-integration gives me a dbus api and I then it's just some busctl and jq in bash |
| 2023-03-08 07:47:04 | <liskin> | It's a bit slow though, so I don't use it as much |
| 2023-03-08 07:48:32 | <geekosaur> | "plasma"? KDE based? or just intended for use with KDE but actually more general? |
| 2023-03-08 07:50:08 | <liskin> | The latter |
| 2023-03-08 07:50:35 | <liskin> | Solid: https://github.com/liskin/dotfiles/blob/home/.bashrc.d/50_aliases.sh#L91 and https://github.com/liskin/dotfiles/blob/home/bin/rofi-plasma-browser-integration |
| 2023-03-08 07:51:16 | <liskin> | (and then I have my own fork of https://github.com/erichgoldman/add-url-to-window-title but I don't remember why) |
| 2023-03-08 07:52:19 | <Solid> | liskin: should've known :P But thanks, I'll check it out! |
| 2023-03-08 07:53:08 | <liskin> | Oh, just to make it work with Firefox, which I actually don't use. |
| 2023-03-08 07:53:09 | <Solid> | geekosaur: pulls in about 110 dependencies on my system, so it seems *very* well-integrated into KDE at least |
| 2023-03-08 07:53:41 | <liskin> | Primarily because running webextensions from local git clones is such a massive pain in the ass. |
| 2023-03-08 07:55:17 | <liskin> | Whichever moron thought that there's no middle ground between "users who can't be trusted to admin they own computer" and "users willing to patch and compile Firefox" should get some torture. |
| 2023-03-08 07:57:52 | <liskin> | It wouldn't be difficult to do the whole thing yourself without all the deps |

| 2023-03-08 15:19:13 | <gauthier> | Hi! So, my machine dies of low battery again, without notifying me, again. I use xfce4-power-manager, to notify my at 15 %, but it doesn't. Any idea where these notifications might get lost? On Ubuntu 20.04 |
| 2023-03-08 15:20:48 | <geekosaur> | are you running a notification utility? dunst is popular with xmonad, alternately you can run xfce4-notifyd if you like xfce stuff |
| 2023-03-08 15:21:15 | <geekosaur> | it will not be started automatically |
| 2023-03-08 15:22:21 | <gauthier> | that might be the issue. Chrome does show notifications, so I thought this was taken care of. But maybe Google did some magic secret stuff that bypasses anything? |
| 2023-03-08 15:22:46 | <geekosaur> | chrome does its own built-in notifications if there's nothing listening on the dbus endpoint |
| 2023-03-08 15:22:54 | <geekosaur> | so does firefox |
| 2023-03-08 15:24:07 | <gauthier> | oh, so now that you made me run dunst (thanks :) ), it will catch the chrome and firefox notifications? That might be a good feature, since I wanted to keep them but make them silent |
| 2023-03-08 15:24:42 | <geekosaur> | you may have to change a setting, at one point it was configurable in the settings although I didn't see it last time I went through them |
| 2023-03-08 15:25:27 | <gauthier> | the settings of chrome, you mean? That's where you were able to tell it to send to a different notifier? |
| 2023-03-08 15:26:09 | <gauthier> | well, a restart of Chrome and now it sends notifications to dunst |
| 2023-03-08 15:26:53 | <geekosaur> | well, tell it not to use its built-in notifications |
| 2023-03-08 15:27:10 | <geekosaur> | but it seems I got it right the first time and it checks for a dbus endpoint |
| 2023-03-08 15:28:30 | <gauthier> | That's awesome (well no, that's xmonad), thanks! The weird thing is that I've seen these notifications in the past, without running dunst explicitly. It might be from the time I was still running xmobar, or trayer, or mabe something else that handled notifications |
| 2023-03-08 15:29:03 | <gauthier> | but I'm happy with chrome using dunst, especially if that gives me more control than Chrome offered for their built-in ones. |
| 2023-03-08 15:29:18 | <geekosaur> | xfce4 became a full desktop environment at some point, maybe something you did caused it to launch its notifyd |
| 2023-03-08 15:29:53 | <geekosaur> | (that is, running individual xfce programs is no longer supported and may launch the full DE) |
