2022-08-31 06:16:50 × mvk quits (~mvk@2607:fea8:5ce3:8500::a1ec) (Ping timeout: 255 seconds)
2022-08-31 06:24:33 <[Leary]> Solid: Yeah, it has that problem. There are half a dozen ways to achieve anything you want to do, but often there's nowhere that actually lays them out or says what the modern option is.
2022-08-31 06:26:20 <[Leary]> Despite kinda being the local nix guy, I'm actually in a love-hate relationship with it. I love the ideas underneath it all, and I love that nix the cli tool and NixOS exist and work. But nix the language and nixpkgs are desperately wanting for some real types and some structure, respectively---not at all unrelated problems.
2022-08-31 06:28:21 <[Leary]> The documentation partially stems from that, in that fragments of the solution to any one problem are scattered in the belly of nixpkgs, not easily found or understood, difficult to document.

2022-08-31 12:08:30 <diep> Hi, for some reason I fail to bind (using EZConfig) `<M-,>`. Is this normal?

2022-08-31 12:09:12 <diep> When I try to use this keybind there is an error log `Prelude.head: empty list`
2022-08-31 12:09:38 <diep> not sure how to interpret this
2022-08-31 12:17:51 × diep quits (~diep@2a01:cb11:2d7:4a00:a13f:e40c:c4e8:736c) (Remote host closed the connection)
2022-08-31 12:32:51 <geekosaur> @tell diep that sounds like a bug in the EZConfig parser, but the correct sequence is "M-," without the brackets
2022-08-31 12:32:51 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.
2022-08-31 12:35:30 geekosaur tries to remember who rewrote the parser. Solid?

2022-08-31 12:41:55 catman joins (~catman@user/catman)
2022-08-31 13:04:51 <geekosaur> @tell diep Brackets are used with keys that have long names, for example you could bind to "M-<Escape>". the list of such keys is in the XMonad.Util.EZConfig documentation
2022-08-31 13:04:51 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.
2022-08-31 13:06:45 <geekosaur> @tell diep maybe a better example is that "M-F1" would bind to the sequence `M-F`, `1` (which you probably can't type), whereas "M-<F1>" binds to the F1 key
2022-08-31 13:06:45 <lambdabot> Consider it noted.

2022-08-31 13:36:34 × wonko_ quits (~wjc@2a0e:1c80:2::130) (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
2022-08-31 13:45:02 <Ehllie> how does one configure xmonad to handle polkit authentication request popups?
2022-08-31 13:45:33 <Ehllie> i use 1password, and have it act as my ssh identity server
2022-08-31 13:46:28 <geekosaur> I have no special configuration for them, they just work. What's going wrong?
2022-08-31 13:46:48 <Ehllie> so whenever an app wants to use an ssh key, it asks the 1password socket, which then prompts me for a password, or at least it did on gnome
2022-08-31 13:47:36 <Ehllie> on xmonad i just get an authentication failiure
2022-08-31 13:47:45 <geekosaur> hm. I'm using the mate / gnnome 2 stuff because I run xmonad under mate
2022-08-31 13:47:56 <Ehllie> on xmonad i just get authentication failiure
2022-08-31 13:48:14 <geekosaur> you may need to run xmonad under some polkit agent, lemme check

2022-08-31 13:50:01 <geekosaur> looks like you need to be running dbus
2022-08-31 13:50:41 <Ehllie> ah, i thought i had it enabled globally, but it might have only been in my gnome module
2022-08-31 13:51:41 <geekosaur> `exec dbus-launch xmonad`
2022-08-31 13:55:13 <geekosaur> I haven't tried 1password for linux, if you're running some agent before xmonad then you have to start dbus differently so both it and xmonad know about the dbus session
2022-08-31 13:55:48 <Ehllie> so should i put `exec dbus-launch xmonad` in my .xsession?
2022-08-31 13:56:57 <geekosaur> https://paste.tomsmeding.com/XfC4PDrq
2022-08-31 13:58:15 <geekosaur> do either one or the other, it depends on whether you start anything else that needs dbus in your .xsession

2022-08-31 14:01:11 Ehllie joins (~Thunderbi@217-67-208-66.itsa.net.pl)
2022-08-31 14:01:30 liskin needs to run /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 explicitly
2022-08-31 14:02:08 <Ehllie> ok, switched back to xmonad to have it in front of me
2022-08-31 14:07:30 <Ehllie> also, is <Ctrl-\> bound to anything by default in xmonad? cause i can't use my toggle term keybind in neovim
2022-08-31 14:09:24 <geekosaur> all xmonad keybinds use whatever you've defined as modMask (default Alt, often changed to Super/Win key)
2022-08-31 14:13:06 <Ehllie> i've changed it to super, but beyond that and setting my default terminal to alacritty, i haven't done anything
2022-08-31 14:13:40 <Ehllie> i'm just trying to figure out which default could be clashing with it
2022-08-31 14:14:32 <geekosaur> does it work outside of xmonad?
2022-08-31 14:15:03 <geekosaur> (unless you're using it in graphical mode, I'd expect C-\ to cause problems because it's the default abort-with-core key)
2022-08-31 14:16:25 <Ehllie> it does work outside of xmonad
2022-08-31 14:16:52 <Ehllie> i'm not even running neovim through the terminal but via neovide
2022-08-31 14:17:33 <Ehllie> but the behaviour is the same when running neovim directly
2022-08-31 14:17:43 <Ehllie> the cursor just flashes for a second and nothing happens
2022-08-31 14:19:24 <geekosaur> fascinating. here it inserts it as a control character but it doesn't show until I press escape. I wonder what its default binding is
2022-08-31 14:19:54 <geekosaur> actually it shows if I press some other key also.
2022-08-31 14:20:51 <Ehllie> my xmonad config is literally just 11 lines rn https://pastebin.com/8weL0bJY
2022-08-31 14:21:30 <geekosaur> looks fine, shouldn't do anything with C-\
2022-08-31 14:22:19 <geekosaur> have you verified that your nvim config file is being loaded? (I don't even know what that is these days, I still use .exrc because I'm ancient 🙂
2022-08-31 14:22:47 <Ehllie> oh, it is. it's very custom and i'd know if it wasn't lol

2022-08-31 14:27:54 <geekosaur> goodness gracious, looks like it's trying to be vscode 🙂
2022-08-31 14:29:19 <Ehllie> i have been using vscode for a while, and having a smooth transfer to neovim was the plan
2022-08-31 14:32:47 <Ehllie> and btw, entrypoint for neovim is usually $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/nvim/init.lua nowadays
2022-08-31 14:42:29 × Ehllie quits (~Thunderbi@217-67-208-66.itsa.net.pl) (Remote host closed the connection)
2022-08-31 14:51:22 <geekosaur> I still wish there were a way to ask the X server what clients have passive grabbed what keys

2022-08-31 16:50:19 <Solid> geekosaur: yes I rewrote the EZConfig parser (but I wrote property tests for the old parser first, so hopefully nothing broke :)
2022-08-31 16:51:00 <geekosaur> so the old one would have also thrown an error from head?
2022-08-31 16:51:11 <geekosaur> [31 12:09:12] <diep> When I try to use this keybind there is an error log `Prelude.head: empty list`
2022-08-31 16:51:25 <geekosaur> from the incorrect keybinding "<M-,>"
2022-08-31 16:51:43 <Solid> let me double check
2022-08-31 16:54:36 <Solid> Mh, I don't get an exception at all with the new code
2022-08-31 16:55:12 <geekosaur> maybe they're still running 0.15/0.16
2022-08-31 16:56:09 <Solid> maybe I fixed bugs \o/
2022-08-31 16:56:47 <geekosaur> hopefully it produces a better error message for a special key not in the list
