2023-10-04 14:13:20 <fizzie> I bought a rebranded Clevo laptop from a small German company once (not that one, something with three letters in its name). It was covered in this high-friction rubbery coating, which over the years turned into sticky goo.
2023-10-04 14:13:27 <fizzie> (Not saying they'll all do that.)
2023-10-04 14:34:50 <Solid> I think they use pretty standard magnesium/plastic cases for these
2023-10-04 14:35:43 <Solid> I was thinking about a framework laptop, but only 3 actual ports (one would have to be reserved for charging) is pretty unusable for me
2023-10-04 14:37:22 <Solid> (and I'm not going any higher than 13", or the 14" models that apparently are the same size as my X220)
2023-10-04 15:14:07 chomwitt joins (~chomwitt@2a02:587:7a24:b000:1ac0:4dff:fedb:a3f1)
2023-10-04 15:14:07 <geekosaur> this one sits on my desk and 4 ports is fine, or I can plug in an extender if needed
2023-10-04 15:20:16 × hightower2 quits (~hightower@212.15.178.50) (Read error: Connection reset by peer)

2023-10-04 16:46:00 <liskin> Solid: oh, I was just going to say that I forgot to mention that you should prefer a T480s over a T480, because the plastic chassis of the T4xx/T14/P14s series is complete rubbish
2023-10-04 16:46:24 <liskin> I had to disassemble the T25 twice (memory upgrade, ssd replacement) and now the plastics barely hold together
2023-10-04 16:46:38 <liskin> but since you're not going for a 14" anyway… nevermind :-)
2023-10-04 16:49:59 <liskin> (and Framework is very firmly in the "never spend that kind of money on a laptop with a cheap macbookeyboard lookalike" category)

2023-10-05 09:21:02 <liskin> Solid: fair enough :-)
2023-10-05 09:22:02 <liskin> (I'm assuming you mean the repairability, because the keyboard thing doesn't really have a solution these days)
2023-10-05 09:51:09 <haskellbridge> <Solid> Yeah I mean the repairability. I almost exclusively use my Atreus these days (which is small enough so that I can even take it with me while travelling), so a good keyboard is not a top priority anymore—although I will miss it :(
2023-10-05 13:09:31 <liskin> Yeah, the Atreus seems to go in the opposite direction of where I'd like to see keyboards go, having even less keys than laptops these days :-D
2023-10-05 13:31:31 <Solid> layers are fun I swear :D
2023-10-05 13:35:31 <fizzie> How about a stacked keyboard, organ-console-style? Just call it "reifying the layers" or something.
2023-10-05 13:38:09 <fizzie> "Introducing the ultimate multitasker's dream: our stacked keyboard revolutionizes your workflow by reifying the layers! Say goodbye to modifier keys and hello to seamless efficiency. 💡🚀 #StackedKeyboard #EfficiencyUnleashed #NoMoreModifiers"
2023-10-05 13:38:30 <fizzie> (Courtesy of the neighbouring AI-bot.)
2023-10-05 14:20:44 <Solid> lol
2023-10-05 14:21:13 <Solid> A stacked keyboard would require me to move my fingers off the home-row—something that I want to avoid :>
2023-10-05 14:28:34 <mc47> I would love to see you code on that thing Solid
2023-10-05 14:28:55 <mc47> I'm already running out of keybinding combinations that I'll actually remember
2023-10-05 14:31:37 <Solid> mc47: Especially coding is actually a lot more comfortable! Things like "tapping Control is (", "tapping Alt is [", "tapping Shift-Alt is {", and so on means I never have to move my fingers very far (and Emacs takes care of the respective closing delimiter)
2023-10-05 14:31:56 <Solid> For numbers I just hold down a button with my right thumb, and have a numpad-like cluster on my left hand etc.
2023-10-05 14:32:02 <Solid> It's great :D
2023-10-05 14:33:14 <mc47> Definitely got my interest, but doesn't look that gamer-friendly so it'll wait a bit
2023-10-05 14:35:29 <Solid> Yeah gaming is one domain where I think you'll be better off with a standard-size keyboard (or like a ≥ 65%)
2023-10-05 14:54:03 liskin uses an external keyboard for gaming anyway, don't wanna destroy the laptop one by smashing it too hard :-)
